Devon Scott was this year's winner of the Grand Champion Steer title at the Junior Steer Classic, which was held at the Calgary Stampede grounds on July 16.

The 20-year-old has been competing in the Junior Steer Classic for five years, and this year walked away with a $12,000 scholarship and $5,000 in prize money.

His steer Rotor weighed in at 1382 lbs, and featured Simmental, Angus, and Maine-Anjou in it's genes. The steer was raised on the family operation, Scott Land and Cattle, in Arrowrood.

Scott was particularly pleased both Reserve and Grand Champion Steers were home grown.

"It's pretty cool to see two home raised steers win the show there. A lot of times you get some steers that come up out of the States and they win ,which is fine that's what happens and that's good, but it's nice to see two local steers out of Western Canada come in to Calgary and get the job done."

The Stampede veteran recently graduated from Lethbridge College's Agriculture Science Program, and is working his way into the purebred world.

"I'm planning on doing a bunch of A.I. courses and some ultrasound courses, so I'm going to use the scholarship money to go towards that. The cash money will be used to help me get into a purebred Simmental herd that I'm trying to get into right now. So that'll kick start that operation."

The Grand Champion Steer was sold to the Ron Daley Group for $22,000, and the money will go towards next year's prizes and scholarships for the show.
