A group of southern Alberta farmers and their supporters have taken to the highway to protest Bill 6, the farm workers protection act.

John Berger is a member of the group and he says they've brought out combines, trucks, machinery and even a horse to block one northbound lane of Highway 2 about 5 kilometres north of Nanton to show their displeasure with the legislation.

Berger says says the Bill will cause a lot of problems for farmers and says we've got a new government and without any consultation or without even a reasonable timeframe to ramp up and make changes the government is forcing the new rules on them.

"One of the things is workers comp, and I think it's over 30, 35 years we've had workers comp at our farm, it's voluntary, it costs us money but for our peace of mind we have it for all of our workers," Berger says. "This is going to cost us money and we can't add it on to our product. We will have to absorb the costs ourselves, we still compete in a world market and have to produce the highest quality in the world, at the lowest price in the world or our product doesn't move."

He says they're opposed to both the legislation and the lack of time and opportunities to provide feedback.

Berger says they've received a good deal of support from motorists along the highway.
