Downy brome is starting to become a problem is Southern Alberta.

There has been rumour the weed is starting to become resistant to herbicides and making a resurgence in southern regions of the province. Weed specialist for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Nicole Kimmel, says she doesn't agree with the rumour though.

"I don't know about resurging, but it's difficult to find in Southern Alberta because it's a grass in a grass. It lies in waiting before it get's discovered, so it takes a while for the population to actually build before you notice it. It is difficult to identify, and it's an annual, so it goes straight into seed production."

General weed management practices include washing equipment regularly, using certified hay, gravel, and seed.
