The approximate hay price throughout the Province is 4 to 6 cents per pound for round bales.

Dean Dyck, Farm Business Management Specialist with the Alberta Ag Info Centre, says hay prices are tricky because they will vary from region to region.

"I generally tell people that hay is a very localized market. There's some trucking that goes on, but unless there's a shortage in a certain area, hay tends to stick around that certain area."

He adds there may be higher quality hay in southern Alberta where there are irrigated hay crops, which means those bales will come with an extra cost.

As usual, producers and buyers can expect higher prices for square bales in the horse market.
