Airdrie RCMP is looking into an incident from last week at the Chinook Winds Skate Park, involving a 10 and 13-year-old.

Cst. Dan Martin of the RCMP says that Police are investigating what took place and need the public to hear that.

“The matter is still under investigation, it’s not complete. We don’t know if charges are going to be laid and even if they are we won’t be releasing any information. We just wanted to reach and make sure that people were aware that it’s being investigated.”

RCMP say that due to the age of those involved, their names, photographs and further information on the investigation will not be released.

The incident in question sparked outrage on many Social Media groups across the city and Cst. Martin says they’ve seen many of those posts.

However, he points out that some posts diminished their ability to obtain independent, untainted information from witnesses.

One of the many comments that came from Social Media was regarding the Skate Park itself, with many concerned that it was becoming too dangerous.

Cst. Martin says they do get complaints regarding the Skate Park each year, but it’s not just confined to that particular place.

“It’s a very well used facility within Airdrie. It’s not supervised by anybody in particular. Altercations can take place at any time and any place. Anytime you have children playing in an area whether it be on an ice rink on the soccer field or a basketball court, there’s always the potential for an altercation.”

Cst. Martin also says that they do patrols on that regularly, but they can’t be there 24/7.

We asked the City of Airdrie if they have received more complaints recently regarding the park, to which they told us that they haven’t received any more than normal so far this year.

While the RCMP and Municipal Enforcement patrols are happening around the skate park, Cst. Martin says that also need you to keep an eye out.

“We highly encourage parents, if you’re sending your child to the skate, please make sure they are supervised by an adult. If you see an issue that requires Police attention, by all means, call the RCMP.”
