On Monday, Airdrie's Indigenous community and other supporters came together to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The event had a more sombre approach as a vigil was held to remember the hundreds of children found buried in former Residential School sites.

Dozens flocked to the amphitheatre at Nose Creek Park for the vigil, many clad in orange shirts, holding signs of encouragement, standing in solidarity with the Indigenous community.

The evening featured stories from local Indigenous people and songs performed by the duo "The Healers".

Pearl White Quills is one of the members of that duo who said it has been an emotional roller coaster for many First Nations people.

"We have been triggered and many of our elders have expressed how much this has reopened some wounds. It's been quite heavy."
