The future of the Balzac Community Hall was up in the air earlier this week as current and past board members met to discuss their current situation.

The board held a special meeting on Tuesday (May 22nd) to talk about a crisis situation where the board needed more members in order to legally continue.

Current President Lisa McGrath organized the meeting and explained why they needed to bring in more members.

“The legal department then got a hold of me on Friday, advised me that yes, everything is fine, you can continue on but we are going to need the quorum of a board because otherwise, you can’t move forward as a legal entity. In the event that something is to happen, we need to pay out a legal entity and you guys currently aren’t that. Then the rush was on.”

With the insurance for the Hall set to be renewed in October, the Board needed to find the quorum or a minimum number of board members in order for the insurance to go through.

If a quorum was not reached, the possibility of selling or donating the Hall to an outside party became a real possibility.

“That was the biggest fear,” said McGrath. “We were getting e-mails saying, ‘ok, better get your title, better look into it. The next step might be selling, the next step might be donating and we all freaked, we’re not donating the Hall, we’re not selling the Hall. Of course, that was part of my correspondence onto the masses on Social Media.”

After much discussion in the meeting, current and past members were able to vote to allow new members to be nominated.

At the end of all the discussions and politics, that’s exactly what they accomplished.

“At the end of the day, we got what we needed. We succeeded and we received six more people on our board, we were able to bring back the old people even if it’s just for a small duration, just to move forward.”

The board for the Balzac Hall is always looking for members, with meetings taking place every third Monday at 7:30 pm inside the Hall.
