13-year-old Airdronian Kobe Lorne had a very successful wrestling season.

Lorne first started wrestling at the young age of eight. After taking some time off for Brazilian Jiujitsu, he ended up getting back into the sport and already has four provincial championships under his belt.

He started taking wrestling seriously two and a half years ago. He currently trains at The Roc Wrestling Club.

Here are his 2024 accomplishments in wrestling:

  • 1st in Canadian National Wrestling Championship (U15 men’s Greco) 48kg
  • Award for the Outstanding Wrestler U15 Men’s Greco
  • 1st in Alberta Winter Games Wrestling 48kg
  • Provincials champion:
    • 1st Alberta Open Wrestling Championship for U15 Greco 51 kg
    • 1st Alberta Open Wrestling Championship for U15 Freestyle  51 kg
    • 1st Alberta Open Wrestling Championship for U17 Greco 51 kg
    • 1st Alberta Open Wrestling Championship for U17 Freestyle  51 kg
  • 1st in Three Forks Montana wrestling Greco

Lorne has also attended multiple wrestling competitions in the USA while planning to attend more to further his skills.

When asked about his return to wrestling, Lorne attributed it to the sport he was currently training in, Jiujitsu. Initially, he took up wrestling to enhance his Jiujitsu abilities, but over time, he developed a deep passion for the sport.

"It's been really good so far and I can't wait to see where it goes from here."

Lorne hopes to make the national championship a regular occurrence for years to come. Being only 13, he is excited to see what he can do before universities hopefully come calling.

"My coach always seems to figure out how to help wrestlers get into universities. I hope to go to the University of British Columbia when it comes time."

According to his parents, they are happy that he is enjoying the sports, as it has definitely helped him have a good work ethic, gave him confidence and also helped him defend himself against bullies at school.

Up next for Lorne is preparing to hopefully compete at Nationals for U17 next year. One of his major goals for wrestling is to participate in the Olympic trials to hopefully represent Canada one day on the biggest stage.
